The AIMS South Africa AI for Science Master’s Programme 2023 is now accepting applications. A new stream in the Master of Mathematical Science programme at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in South Africa, called AI for Science, was made feasible thanks to a collaboration with DeepMind.

The programme is located at the fascinating nexus of science and artificial intelligence. It is a one-year taught masters programme that is entirely residential and includes research. Students from all over Africa who are enthusiastic about mathematics, AI, and machine learning are welcome to apply. They are searching for students who are awestruck by the universe and the wonders of the cosmos and who want to use their skills to advance scientific research.

Funding for AIMS AI for Science 

  • 40 scholars will get yearly funding from DeepMind over the following four years. The money pays for full scholarships, student computing expenses, and equipment.
  • As DeepMind scholars, the students will receive access to DeepMind’s researchers and engineers for mentoring and support.
  • Beyond scholarships, DeepMind’s industry-leading expertise in AI for Science will be utilised by the programme.

Eligibility

Applicant must:

  • be a resident in Africa at time of application.
  • be a citizen of any country in Africa.
  • by August 2023, having earned a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with a year of honours (or December 2023 for southern African applicants). Your undergraduate degree could be in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, statistics, or any other field with a significant computational and mathematical component.
  • In order to enrol as a Master’s degree student in South Africa, one must have finished either a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with an additional year of honours.

How to apply ?

  • Register here and upload the following documents before 11:59 PM on April 8:Your curriculum vitae
  • A motivation letter of around 500 words
  • Academic transcripts
  • Written mathematics questions (to be found on the application site)
  • Coding problem (to be found on the application site)

Twelve brief math problems and one code issue are present in the online application. Although it’s not a test, the questions help the selection committee understand how you think about issues. A complete application cannot be submitted at the last minute, hence AIMS South Africa encourages potential DeepMind Scholars to start their applications as soon as possible!
